General description

Almere was built as a "new town" according to the planning insights of the last century. Underlying this is Ebenezer Howard's concept of the garden city. The garden city was constructed as a multi-city with green interstices in which various urban functions are included. In the garden city, greenery and water are part of the city; indeed, as a landscape, greenery and water are given a central place in the urban structure.

Architecture / Urban planning

The backbone of the green outdoor space was formed by the watercourses and the paths and roads built in the green banks along them. These still form the recreational network connecting the various residential areas with each other and with the landscape surrounding the city. Along this network, parks and ponds were realized. They were designed for relaxation and encounters and derive their significance from the various activities that can or will take place there. More towards the edges of the city the green areas are larger and form part of the regional landscape. These areas usually combine multiple functions, such as nature development, wood production, agriculture or recreation.
