General description

Tuindorp Oostzaan is a true garden village on the North Shore of Amsterdam. It was one of the garden villages built in Amsterdam North between World War I and World War II to alleviate the impoverished working-class neighborhoods in the city center. These garden villages, such as Nieuwendam, Buiksloot, Volewijck, Vogeldorp and Disteldorp were created thanks to the social ideals of the city administrators Floor Wibaut and Monne de Miranda, and the director of the Amsterdam Municipal Housing Service, Arie Keppler. They wanted to house the growing group of workers from the new industries and shipbuilding on the north bank of the IJ close to their work, to avoid the need for an expensive connection between the center and Amsterdam-North. Today there is a fast ferry connection, but Tuindorp Oostzaan has been (partially) self-contained and rather isolated for many years. Therefore, the residents of Tuindorp Oostzaan formed a strong community and living in Tuindorp Oostzaan was a strong part of your identity!

After his employment with the municipality in 1921, Boeyinga would leave an explicit mark on the housing service's plans for this neighborhood. The urban plan of Tuindorp Oostzaan was made by Boeyinga and J.H.(Jo) Mulder. They also designed Vogeldorp, Disteldorp, Tuindorp Nieuwendam and Floradorp. While Mulder was already busy designing the first garden villages in Noord, Boeyinga was still working for Michel de Klerk as building supervisor on the second residential block on the Spaarndammerplantsoen. The buildings of Tuindorp Oostzaan are in the style of the Amsterdam School. Originally for Tuindorp Oostzaan about 1,000 workers' houses were built. Besides developing the town plan, Boeyinga also designed a number of residential blocks himself, including the Zonneplein. Characteristic of the side streets are the gateway buildings that span the streets. Necessary facilities such as schools and stores also had to be built in the new residential areas. The Zonneplein was the center of garden village Oostzaan. This is accentuated by putting an extra floor on the buildings on the Zonneplein, creating full-fledged housing above the stores as well. The square has a somewhat fortress-like appearance. The gate on the Zonneweg side reinforces this image. The building has a
