Description

In 1919, the newly founded Gartenstadt Hamburg eG acquired 55 hectares of the former Berne estate. That was the starting signal for the first construction projects of our cooperative and at the same time the beginning of the settlement of Berne as a district. The garden city settlement in Berne, with its 540 semi-detached houses, is still regarded as an exemplary form of the German garden city movement. The settlement has been under environmental protection since 1985. In May 2013, most (94%) of the settlement was listed as a historical monument.

Today the cooperative manages over 2,200 residential units and various commercial areas. The majority of our housing stock is located in the three districts of Berne, Meiendorf and Bramfeld. We offer all members the opportunity to actively and lively shape life in the cooperative through events and the use of common rooms. Senior-friendly apartments in various residential complexes are available to our older members.

In the future, too, we will continue to expand the quality of life and the living climate for our members with continuous maintenance and modernization of our stock. This is how our members can feel "at home" for a lifetime.
